Dealer vs Private Sale: Why It Matters in NZ

Private sales can look cheaper, but dealer purchases come with legal protections that could save you thousands. Here's the difference.

It's tempting to buy privately — the prices often look lower. But there are important differences that every NZ buyer should understand.

Consumer Guarantees Act Protection

When you buy from a registered motor vehicle trader (like Premium Wholesale Cars, MVT #M413677), the Consumer Guarantees Act applies. This means: - The vehicle must be of acceptable quality - It must be fit for purpose - It must match the description given - You have legal recourse if something goes wrong

None of this applies to private sales. Buy privately and you're on your own if the engine blows a week later.

Finance and Encumbrance Checks

Registered dealers are required to ensure vehicles are free of outstanding finance. In a private sale, if the seller still owes money on the car, the finance company can repossess it — even from you.

Warranty Options

Dealers can offer mechanical warranties and service plans. We partner with Janssens Insurance and Autosure to provide extended warranty coverage that gives genuine peace of mind.

The Price Difference Is Smaller Than You Think

Once you factor in the cost of a pre-purchase inspection, the risk of hidden problems, and the value of CGA protection, the gap between dealer and private pricing shrinks considerably. And with wholesale pricing like ours, it often disappears entirely.
